Eco friendly fashion known as sustainable fashion or
ethical fashion are often used interchangeably should first and foremost be
about reducing fashion consumption. Reducing our own footprint starts by being
mindful of consumption and waste. This ultimately means buying less and
purchasing only what we need. When a garment is damaged, many think nothing
more of chucking it out and replacing it with something new. However many items
can be repaired easily for example sew back a new button when it’s missing. We
can mend a seam that is coming apart and darn a sock or sweater. As Australia
is the second most wasteful society with 650 kg of waste per
person sent to landfill each year, we need to start changing
the mindset of throwing fashion items away which can be repair, recycle and
repurpose.
Instead of throwing items that we no longer need in the
trash, we can recycle those. There are two ways to do this, we can either
donate items to a charity or opportunity shop as they will recycle our goods or
turn our trash into someone else’s treasure. Or we can recycle the fabrics by turning
it into another garment known as upcycling. We can choose to donate our second
hand items to increasing numbers of designers who will happily receive and
recycle unwanted garments. Repurposed fashion is similar to upcycling in that
it is a form of recycling but unlike upcycling where fashion is altered to create an item with a
similar purpose. Repurposing involves
altering it so that it is given an entirely new purpose or use, for example is
turning an old jeans pants into a tote bag.
Reinventing wardrobe goes hand in hand with buying less and
also involves being creative. Let’s be honest with ourselves it’s easy to go
shopping for an item that we want because it’ll ‘complete’ our outfits. So much
more creativity is involved in looking at existing closet and finding outfit
goodness. So reinventing closet involves creating new outfits that we may
otherwise not have considered. In an effort to stave off style boredom, we need
to put our creative thinking cap on and began to see combinations we hadn’t
seen before and application like Pinterest can be so handy to draw inspiration
from. We can start thinking ourselves like fashion stylists with zero budget. Eco friendly
fashion means more than just purchasing from 'eco' fashion house. It doesn't
solely focus on how we shop and encourages us to look at our existing
relationship with our existing wardrobe.
